The government has sought to dispel the notion of a tussle between the Election Commission and the government in the backdrop of Law and Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshids remarks on sub-quota for backward class minorities attracting the ECs ire.

Sources on Friday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had recently written to Chief Election Commissioner CEC S Y Quraishi that the government was committed to upholding the constitutional autonomy to the Election Commission.

The PM is learnt to have replied to Quraishi after the CEC had written to him late last month, expressing his apprehensions about the Law Ministers reported remarks underlining administrative control of the government over the EC during the raging controversy over the Lokpal Bill last month.
