Fitness trainer Rohan Apte recently shared a glimpse of The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives‘ Bhavana Pandey doing a cardio workout. “Not missing her cardio conditioning,” wrote Apte in an Instagram post in which she can be seen doing some agility drills, along with muscle-strengthening exercises.

Consultant dietitian and fitness trainer Garima Goyal said the post highlighted a grounded, practical approach to fitness that goes beyond high-intensity workouts, especially for those in their 50s. “Cardio conditioning is a foundational component of overall health, and when practised consistently, it supports heart health, metabolic efficiency, endurance, and mental resilience, especially in the 50s,” Goyal said.

Whether it’s brisk walking, interval cardio, cycling or light agility drills, these movements help optimise cardiovascular function and improve oxygen delivery to muscles throughout the day.

According to Goyal, what stands out in Bhavana’s routine is the focus on conditioned stamina rather than extreme intensity. “Especially for those balancing multiple roles and responsibilities, cardio conditioning should enhance energy, not exhaust it. Properly structured cardio trains the body to use both fat and glucose efficiently as fuel, supports better insulin sensitivity,y and encourages improved sleep patterns,” said Goyal.

Over time, such routines help reduce the risk of lifestyle conditions such as high blood pressure, poor cholesterol balance, and decreased endurance that can stem from sedentary habits.

Goyal said that equally important is how such conditioning integrates with strength training and recovery. “Cardio paired with muscle-strengthening sessions creates a synergistic effect: it builds heart health while preserving lean muscle mass. Moderation and mindfulness are key.”

Listening to the body, allowing adequate rest, focusing on form and breathing, and supporting the routine with balanced nutrition and hydration all ensure that cardio conditioning enhances wellbeing rather than causing burnout.

Goyal mentioned that consistency with cardio conditioning pays off more significantly than sporadic bursts of intense activity. When routines are tailored to the individual – accounting for fitness level, goals, and lifestyle – cardio becomes a sustainable tool for long-term vitality, resilience, and everyday functional strength.
