Good Effort

Director Hemant Prabhu and producers Shrishti and Goldie Behl have put in good effort to make Thoda Hai…as middle class and real as they should be.

Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai

Colors,7.30 pm

It’s a little late in the day,the review of Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai that is,but it’s been a serial one couldn’t have ignored for long.

Set in a middle class house (valued at Rs 4 crore) at Shivaji Park, the Kulkarnis are a content lot. The father enjoys his retired life, the mother works, the sister idles away at home helping her ‘vahini’ Mugdha in babysitting the latter’s daughter and the older brother works in a thankless job. The younger brother Nishikant has recently married his office colleague,Pragya. It’s a love marriage that is blessed by the families after some initial hiccups. There are the usual typical middle class problems like the mother melting her gold jewellery to make “modern designs” for her daughters-in-law or worrying about making space in a one BHK for the new bride! The bride of course is proving to be a pain and is quite a gold-digger,as found out by Nishikant’s wily aunt,Prabha (she speaks funny English) who eggs her on to create trouble for the Kulkarnis and ultimately dreams of taking over the 30 crore building in which they live! With every episode,Pragya is showing her true colours as she gets into a mess, courtesy her ex-boyfriend who uses her in a drug racket…

While I am not sure if the idea of a daughter-in-law getting into all kinds of problems (drugs, smuggling) will go down well with our somewhat conservative audience, most of the situations and dialogues strike a chord, are real (like the concerns of a joint family when a new member arrives). The cast is near-perfect too. Melodrama is kept to a bare minimum. The mother (Neena Kulkarni, perfect, warm and real) is not the weepy kind. The father (Vilas Ujawne) is not of the armchair variety. Hemant Thatte makes Shree, the chauvinistic elder brother grate on your nerves and Aarti Singh as the understanding, patient, sensible elder sunbai,Mugdha is endearing (I hate the fringe though). Priyamvada Kant makes her Pragya a perfect b**** while Romit Raaj as Nishi caught between his middle class values and his ambitious, scheming wife is good. Last but not the least is Asawari Joshi who makes Prabha a patakha, alright.

All in all, director Hemant Prabhu and producers Shrishti and Goldie Behl have put in good effort to make Thoda Hai…as middle class and real as they should be.

Verdict:

Know the Kulkarnis,it will be worth your while.
