With the Muslim festival of Barawafat likely to fall on February 4,the date when the first phase of 60 Assembly segments in Uttar Pradesh are slated to vote,the Election Commission had decided to withhold its earlier announcement for holding polls on that day in the state while retaining all other six dates unchanged. For this purpose,the EC has requested the UP Governor to not issue the notification for the first phase of elections,pending its re-scheduling.
According to the announced schedule,the formal notification for the first phase was slated to be issued on January 10.
The Commission has today decided that the notification for 60 ACs going to poll on 4th February,2012 shall not be issued on 10th January,2012 as scheduled. This is due to uncertainty about the date of Barawafat festival which may also fall on 4th February,20128230;The Commission has accordingly requested the Governor of Uttar Pradesh that he may be pleased not to issue the notification for 1st Phase 60 ACs scheduled to be notified on 10th January,2012, the EC said in a press communique issued today. The revised schedule for 1st phase ACs 60 ACs will be announced by the Commission separately, the EC said.
The decision comes after the ECs meeting with the law and order enforcing agencies and district electoral officers of the state in Lucknow recently where this fact was brought to the notice of the Commission.
However,the other poll dates February 8,11,15,23 and 28 remain unchanged and the process of notification for elections during the other six phases would remain as announced by the EC on December 24.
