Chacko likely to head JPC

Kerala MP P C Chacko,in all probability, will be made the chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee.

Kerala MP P C Chacko,in all probability, will be made the chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee JPC which will probe the 2G spectrum scam after the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday adopts a motion moved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, giving names of the 10 members to be appointed to the parliamentary panel.

Senior UPA sources on Monday asserted that the four-term Thrissur MP is expected to pip his senior colleague Kishore Chandra Deo to the post. Chacko was also a member of the 1992 JPC that went into irregularities and fraudulent manipulations in transactions relating to securities, bonds and other financial instruments. Currently,he is heading the Privileges Committee of Parliament. Deo is a five-term MP who is presently heading the Committee on Public Undertakings.

The sources also said the Upper House members to be nominated to the committee are Pravin Rashtrapal and P J Kurien from the Congress,S S Ahluwalia and Ravi Shankar Prasad from the BJP,Sitaram Yechury CPM,Tiruchi Siva DMK,Y P Trivedi NCP,Satish Mishra BSP and Rama Chandra Prasad Singh JD-U. The Congress is to name another member after Abhishek Singhvi, whose name was proposed for nomination by the party, has reportedly declined to be a part on the plea that he has represented telecom companies as a lawyer.

The process of setting up the JPC will be completed once the Rajya Sabha refers its decision to the Lok Sabha and Speaker Meira Kumar nominates the chairman.

Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee had moved the motion for setting up the committee last week in the Lok Sabha which had named 20 members from the Lower House.
