Archana Puran Singh, Parmeet Sethi still call their in-laws ‘uncle, aunty’ despite 38 years of relationship: ‘We had a secret marriage for 4 years’

Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi met each other in 1988 and soon after that, they started going out with each other. After nearly 38 years, the couple is still together and they often share bits from their life on their YouTube channel. In a new video, the couple recalled the early days of their relationship and shared how they married each other despite opposition from their families. They also shared that even after being together for so many years, they continue to address each other’s parents as ‘uncle’ and ‘aunty’.

Archana explained that they started going out in 1988, and tied the knot secretly in 1992, and for the next four years, they continued to keep their relationship under wraps. So for these eight years, they always addressed each other’s parents as ‘uncle’ and ‘aunty’, and the habit stuck with them. She shared, “We still call them ‘aunty’ and ‘uncle’ and people ask why. He also called my parents uncle and aunty. We were seeing each other for 4 years, and for the next 4 years, we were secretly married. So for 8 years we continued calling them aunty and uncle.”

Archana said that they continued to do this because they did not want anyone to know that they were married to each other as a female actor’s marriage often signaled that she was done with her career. “We didn’t want anyone to know that we were married,” Archana said and added, “So that uncle and aunty is still going on. And everyone is happy with it.” Archana’s mother and Parmeet’s father live with them. Archana’s father passed away in 1995, and Parmeet’s mother passed away a few years ago.

Previously, actor Kajol had shared that after she got married to actor Ajay Devgn, she addressed his mother as ‘aunty’. In a chat shared on Nayandeep Rakshit’s YouTube channel, Kajol shared that addressing her mother-in-law as ‘mummy’ felt strange to her. “‘Aunty ko mummy bulana padega? Kyu? Par meri ek maa already hai. (Aunty will be addressed as mummy? Why? I already have a mother.)’ And she was quite cool about it. She never insisted that you will have to call me mummy since you are a daughter-in-law now. Never said that to me. She said when it happens, it will happen on its own, and it happened,” she shared.

In another chat shared on Tweak India’s YouTube channel, Kajol said that her respect for her mother-in-law increased after she heard her defend Kajol in front of her friends. “I know for a fact, we used to sit, and her friends would come over, and they’d be like, ‘Arey, woh tumhe mummy nahi bulati hai, maa nahi bulati hai (She doesn’t call you mom)?’ And my mother-in-law would turn around very proudly and say, ‘Woh jab maa bulayegi na, dil se niklega, dimaag se nahi niklega (When she does, it’ll come from the heart, not from the head).’ I was so heartened, I was touched. She’s giving me the time to grow into whoever I’m supposed to be. She’s giving me that space. My respect for her deepened,” she shared.
