Witnesses turn hostile in case against Badals

Mohali: Two prosecution witnesses on Tuesday turned hostile during hearing on the corruption and disproportionate assets case registered by the state Vigilance Bureau in 2003 against Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal. The witnesses,an NRI businessman and a Kolkata-based architect,resiled before a special court here. The Badals were not present in the court.

BJP slams Rajasthan over Raje security

New Delhi/Jaipur: The BJP on Tuesday flayed the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan scaling down Vasundhara Rajes security,saying it should not be protocol-based even as the former Rajasthan chief minister dared the state administration to withdraw her security. Security is not necessarily protocol-based. It is based on threat perception and Raje,being a leading figure in Rajasthan politics,should have been assessed accordingly, BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

Fatwa against modelling

Muzaffarnagar UP: A fatwa has been issued by leading Islamic seminary Darul-uloom Deoband against modelling by Muslim women. The seminary has said exhibiting bodies by Muslim women while modelling is against the Shariat law. The fatwa was issued by Mufti Habibur Rehman,Mufti Mehmood Hasan,Mufti Fakhrul Islam,Mufti Zanul Islam and Mufti Waqar Ali of the seminary on Monday.

BJP MLAs house torched in UP

Bahraich: Unidentified persons allegedly torched a part of the house of a BJP MLA in Kotwali area. Some unidentified persons threw inflammable substance on my house on Tuesday and torched a room in which my brother Dineshwar Singh was sleeping. He has suffered burn injuries, BJP MLA from Mehsi,Sureshwar Singh said. A forensic team from Lucknow has been called to inspect the spot, SP Lalji Shukla said. The MLA said this was the second attempt to torch his house.

Woman injured in acid attack

Jalandhar: An unidentified motorcyclist threw acid on a 35-year-old woman at Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar area on Tuesday,the police said. The victim suffered burn injuries on her face,right arm and her feet and was reportedly out of danger. Police suspect marital discord as the reason behind the attack as the woman had been living separately from her husband.

50 ousted staff attempt immolation

Mohali Punjab: Over 50 dismissed rural health workers who have been on a protest at the headquarters of the Punjab Rural Development department on Tuesday allegedly attempted self-immolation. The protesters,who have been on a hunger strike for the past 42 days against their retrenchment,tried to reach the rooftop of Vikas Bhawan but were prevented from doing so,the police said.

Paternity suit: N D Tiwari moves SC

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Courts order which had dismissed his plea and decided to adjudicate a paternity suit filed by a man claiming to be his biological son. Rohit Shekhar,grandson of a former Union minister,had filed the suit claiming he was born out of a relationship between his mother Ujjwala Sharma and Tiwari,a charge denied by Tiwari.
