BJP cancels national meet
NAGPUR: The BJP has decided to put off its three-day national study meet in Nagpur which was scheduled to start on February 8. The reason cited is the upcoming visit of President Pratibha Patil. There are some problems arising out of the two programmes being back-to-back. Also,the Parliament session is coming up and due to some political developments,some top leaders are required to be in New Delhi, Maharashtra BJP spokesman Madhav Bhandari said.
Kerala HC ratifies Islamic NBFC
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala High Court on Thursday ratified the Left governments decision to float Shariah-based non-banking financial company titled Al Barakh Financial Service Limited. A division bench dismissed the writ petitions filed by Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy and Kerala Hind Coordination Committee general secretary R V Babu,which challenged the establishment of the NBFC in which the state-run Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation has 11 per cent stake.
UP Lokayukta notice to minister
LUCKNOW: UP Lokayukta has issued notice to the Minister of State for Haj and Minority Affairs Anees Ahmed alias Phool Babu,for the alleged misappropriation of funds from the MLA Fund. The minister in violation of the guidelines for the utilisation of funds,in last three years has spent around Rs 98 lakh from the fund on three private educational institutions owned by him.
CBI counsel quits Scarlett murder case
PANAJI: Trial in the Scarlett Eden Keeling murder case has suffered a setback as the CBI counsel quit from the case. Public Prosecutor S R Rivonkar wrote to the CBI expressing his desire to quit,claiming that he would not be able to give enough time to the trial,CBI sources said on Thursday. Rivonkar divulged his unwillingness last month and since then another lawyer has been assigned the case.
