Air traffic at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport was severely disrupted on Wednesday due to dense fog, throwing flight schedules into disarray. While the airport normally begins operations at 5:20 am, visibility remained below 500 metres from 5 am to nearly 10 am, making landings and take-offs unsafe and forcing a prolonged suspension of operations.
Flight movements resumed only after a marginal improvement in visibility. The first arrival landed at Chandigarh airport at 10:57 am, while the first departure took off at 12:50 pm.
The impact of the fog was widespread. As many as 19 inbound flights landed with delays ranging from around two-and-a-half hours to as much as seven hours. On the departure side, 25 flights took off three to seven hours behind schedule.
Several flights had to be cancelled altogether. A total of 12 arrival flights were cancelled, including two each from Pune, Jaipur, Dharamshala and Delhi, along with flights from Lucknow, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and two from Hyderabad. In departures, nine flights were cancelled — two bound for Mumbai and one each for Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
Passengers were left frustrated due to long delays and cancellations. Airport authorities appealed to travellers to remain patient and advised them to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates. The Meteorological Department has forecast the possibility of fog over the next 24 hours as well, prompting officials to advise passengers to reach the airport well in advance of their scheduled departure times.
