CBI raids Chennai varsity,VC house

NEW DELHI: The CBI on Thursday raided the premises of the Indian Maritime University in suburban Uthandi in connection with an alleged disproportionate assets case against its Vice-Chancellor,R Vijayan,at Chennai. Sources said the CBI also raided Vijayans house at Kottivakkam,but he was not available for questioning.

CBI files case against 3 Excise officers

NEW DELHI: The CBI has registered a case against three Central Excise officials at Indore for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices and causing a loss of over Rs 5 crore to the exchequer. The CBI said a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against R T Gulani,Assistant Commissioner,Reeta Nagarkar,Superintendent,and Suneel Gawte,Inspector.

Assam border clash: Curfew relaxed

SHILLONG: With the situation limping back to normal in the ethnic violence-hit Assam-Meghalaya border areas,curfew was relaxed on Thursday for six hours in Resubelpara sub-division of East Garo Hills district. No incident has been reported in the last two days. From tomorrow,only night curfew will be in place, said East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi.

Jharkhand MLA beats up eve-teasers

BOKARO: A Jharkhand MLA beat up two youngsters with sticks for eve-teasing at Aamtola village in Bokaro district. Jagannath Mahto of JMM,who represents Dumri Assembly constituency,summoned Mahendra Mahto and Mithun Ansari after a girl complained to him about eve-teasing by them on Tuesday. Local dailies published photographs of Mahto beating up the two youngsters with sticks.

Manipuri militant held in Andhra

HYDERABAD: A terror operative of the Peoples United Liberation Front,a banned organisation from Manipur,was arrested by the police here for allegedly trying to raise funds. Abdul Latif alias Ayub was arrested from his residence at Balanagar here on Wednesday,police said. Officials also claimed to have recovered five live rounds of 0.45 calibre from his possession.

Cong defends Chavan on coalition remark

NEW DELHI: A day after the NCP slammed Rahul Gandhi8217;s alleged remarks attributing inflation to coalition politics,the Congress was again pressed into damage control on Thursday following Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan8217;s remark about coalition politics being a hindrance in decision-making.

All that Maharashtra CM said was regarding a political reality. This is a comment about a political fact. Nobody is doing a value judgement on coalition politics. There is no question of denying coalitions,8221; Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.
