4-day-oldbaby becomes organ donor
HYDERABAD: A four-day-old baby here became probably the youngest person in the country to donate her organs,with her heart valves and eyes being taken for donation. The girl was born pre-term on July 8 to a revenue inspector in Mahabubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh and his wife. She developed complications two days after birth,and died on July 12.
Court rejects Pacheco bail plea
PANAJI: The bail plea of former Goa minister Fransisco Pacheco,accused in the death of his close friend Nadia Torrado,was rejected on Tuesday. While rejecting the bail plea,Additional Sessions Judge B P Deshpande accepted the prosecutions arguments that it was a serious offence and said that more custodial interrogation was needed. Pachecos lawyer,Amit Palekar,said that they will now move the High Court.
Man arrested for threat call to VS
KOZHIKODE: A man,who allegedly made a threat to the life of Kerala CM V S Achuthanandan,was arrested Tuesday in neighbouring Malapuram District. Babu Chacko,45,made a telephone call to the Thiruvananthapuram police control room Monday night,threatening that an attempt would be made to kill Achuthanandan.
Maoists release 9 kidnapped villagers
BHABUA BIHAR: Maoists have released nine of the 11 villagers they had kidnapped from Kaimur district,officials said on Tuesday. However,the fate of the other two villagers is not known yet. The ultras released three of the hostages on Tuesday morning and another six in the evening,the officials said.
HC rejects bail plea of La Martiniere 8216;visitor8217;
KOLKATA: The Calcutta HC on Tuesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Ramesh Bhattacharya,who was charged with impersonation for visiting La Martiniere for Boys school here,claiming to be representing the Union HRD Ministry. A division bench rejected the plea,on the grounds that investigation into the matter is at an initial stage and granting relief would hamper the probe.
ATM machine with Rs 10 lakh stolen
BANGALORE: An ATM with Rs 10 lakh cash was stolen from the State Bank of Patialas unguarded ATM centre here,police said Tuesday. When the ATM centre in Singasandra on Hosur Road was opened by bank manager K Ramachandran in the morning,the ATM machine was found missing,they said.
IPS officer appointed CBI Special Director
NEW DELHI: Balwinder Singh,an IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre in 1976,has been appointed as the Special Director in CBI. Prior to his promotion,Singh was the Additional Director in charge of the Economic Offences and Bank Securities and Frauds Division,apart from handling the Anti-corruption division for south and west India.
Woman sets minor daughters on fire
LUCKNOW: Upset over harassment for not having a male child,a woman allegedly killed two of her minor daughters by setting fire to them and tried to kill the third one in Milak area of Rampur district on Tuesday. The family did not inform the police and buried the bodies. The police later exhumed the bodies and arrested the woman,Niranta 30,who said that her husband Parmanand Gangwar used to harass her for not having a boy.
