NEW DELHI: Surya Pratap Shahi has been appointed president of the BJPs Uttar Pradesh unit. Shahi was also a Cabinet minister in the last BJP government in the state headed by Rajnath Singh. Shahi belongs to the Bhumihar community and although his castemen don8217;t have much of a presence in the state,his supporters argue that he has consistently got votes form other communities as well. A former minister,Shahi was vice-president of the BJPs UP unit.

ARA: A Bihar court on Wednesday sentenced three persons to death and 20 others to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of 21 Dalits at Bathani Tola in Bhojpur district in 1996. Additional District and Sessions Judge A K Srivastava announced the quantum of punishment on Wednesday.

Maoists kill 2 in Orissa village

BHUBANESWAR: Maoists on Wednesday killed two gramrakhis watchmen in a village at Gajapati district in southern Orissa. Around 50 Maoists,reportedly from Basdhara Divisional Committee of CPI Maoist,stormed Katama village around 2 am and called gramrakhis Sadananda Chhual Singh and Dinabandhu Mantri out of their homes. On the outskirts of the village the rebels shot them dead.

Four tourists killed near Tawang

GUWAHATI: Four tourists were killed and several injured when a vehicle carrying them skidded off the road at Jung,42 km from Tawang on the China border in Arunachal Pradesh,on Tuesday. Official sources in Itanagar said the tourists,all from Kolkata,were travelling to Tawang from Bomdila when they

met with bad weather immediately after sunset at Sela Pass. The vehicle skidded

off the road due to heavy downpour.

SC rejects Karkare death re-probe plea

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a petition seeking re-investigation into the circumstances which led to the death of former Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. A Bench led by Justice B Sudershan Reddy,however,gave Radhakant Yadav,who identifies himself as a former Bihar MLA,liberty to approach the High Court.

CHENNAI: Continuing her allegations against jail authorities at the Vellore Special Prison for Women,Nalini Sriharan,awarded life in prison for her role in Rajiv Gandhi assassination,has charged them of harassing her and even conspiring to kill her. Nalini raised these allegations in her two letters,on April 28 and 30,addressed to Director General of Prisons K R Shyamsundar. The letters were released to the media by her counsel P Pugazhendi on Wednesday. PTI
