Chennai: Superstar Rajnikanth is likely to return to the country on July 13 after over six weeks of treatment for kidney-related ailments in Singapore. While sources close to the actors family remained tight-lipped about the stars return,airport sources said flight tickets had been blocked for him and family members for Wednesday in an international carrier.

Narayana Murthy is PHFI chairperson

NEW DELHI: Founder chairman of Infosys N R Narayana Murthy was elected as the chairperson of Public Health Foundation of India PHFI on Monday. Former chairman Rajat Gupta,a prime accused of insider trading in the US,had resigned in March this year. Murthy will succeed Dr Y V Reddy,who had been functioning as the interim chairman since March 2011.

Custody of Dey killers extended

MUMBAI: The eight men arrested by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch for the June 11 murder of Mid-Day journalist J Dey were produced before the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act MCOCA court on Monday,where their police custody was extended till July 18. Special Public Prosecutor Dilip Shah told the court: Whether the accused were given any other targets to be eliminated still needs to be probed. Besides this,whether the murder weapon recovered has been used in previous offences also needs to be ascertained.

Vibha Tewaris jail sentence suspended

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Monday granted bail to Vibha Tewari,wife of BSP MLA Shekhar Tewari,who was sentenced to two and a half years in jail for the murder of Auraiya PWD executive engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta. The MLA and nine others were awarded life term.

Sankararaman case questioning soon

Puducherry: After completion of examination and cross examination of all prosecution witnesses in the Sankararaman murder case,a local court on Monday fixed July 18 for questioning of all 24 accused in the case. Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi are the prime accused in the case. Sankararaman,manager in the Varadarajaperumal temple in Kancheepuram,was allegedly murdered on the premises of the temple on September 3,2004.

I K Gujrals wife dies at 87

New Delhi: Sheila Gujral,wife of former Prime Minister I K Gujral,passed away here on Monday after a brief illness,her family said. Sheila 87 was a known writer and social worker who has to her credit books in Punjabi,Hindi and English. Educated in Lahore,Sheila did her Masters degree in Economics and had a diploma in journalism. She is survived by her husband and two sons,including Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral.

Pandya: HC hears convicts pleas

AHMEDABAD: Nearly four years after their conviction,the Gujarat High Court on Monday began hearing the appeals of 12 persons in the Haren Pandya murder case. The court has decided to hear the petitions on a daily basis,and it may finish hearing the arguments of both defence and prosecution by this week. Pandya,a former Minister of State Home,was murdered on March 26,2003 in Ahmedabad.
