Youngest on Sir Hillarys Everest team dies at 79
DARJEELING: Nawang Gombu,the first person to climb Mt Everest twice,died here at his residence on Sunday morning after a brief illness,family sources said. Gombu,79,is survived by his wife,three daughters and a son. Besides being the youngest Sherpa to reach South Col during the first successful expedition in 1953,Gombu first climbed Mt Everest along with Jim Whittaker during American Everest Expedition in 1963. Gombu8217;s funeral will be held in Darjeeling on April 28.
Hit-and-run case: Victim loses limb
MUMBAI: The 23-year-old,who was seriously injured after a car driven by the son of a corporate honcho had hit his bike,has had his right leg amputated in order to prevent infection spreading in his body,police said on Sunday. Alauddin Imamuddin Haqs leg has been removed during the operation at the Bombay hospital on Saturday by the doctors attending him following gangrene, S S More,sub inspector at Marine Drive police station said.
Cop seeks quashing of encounter case
MUMBAI: A police constable,arrested in a case of fake encounter of alleged Chotta Rajan aide Ram Narayan Gupta alias Lakkhan Bhaiiya,has moved the Bombay High Court seeking quashing of the case. Constable Ratnakar Kamble,in a petition filed through advocate R B Mokashi,contended that the original FIR registered on November 2006 immediately after the encounter of Lakkhan Bhaiiya by the Versova police station has not yet been classified as false case and it still subsists. In that case,there was no need to lodge a second FIR.
Court orders FIR against BSP MLA
ETAWAH: A local court has ordered the police to lodge an FIR against a ruling BSP MLA,his security guard,a dozen policemen and others for allegedly assaulting and robbing his brother. Special magistrate Sandeep Jain has directed the police to lodge an FIR against BSP MLA from Bharthana Shiv Prasad Yadav,his brothers Chandra Prakash,Puneet Parihar and a dozen policemen,including incharge of civil lines,sources said here.
Vaishnodevi pilgrim dies of heart attack
JAMMU: A pilgrim died due to heart attack on his way to cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Bhola Ram 64,a native of Allahabad,was on his way to the cave shrine when he suffered the attack on Saturday,in Katra town of the district,district officials said on Sunday. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Roadways bus rams into house,12 hurt
FIROZABAD UP: Over a dozen persons,including three women,were on Sunday injured when a roadway bus rammed into a house near Subhash tri-section here,police said. The incident took place when driver of the bus lost control over it while taking a turn,Superintendent of Police Manjil Saini said. The injured have been admitted to a hospital,and two of them are stated to be critical,Saini said.
