Police foil jailbreak attempt in Hubli

HUBLI: Violence erupted in a sub-jail here on Friday as inmates clashed with security personnel and made a vain bid to escape,leaving 27 prisoners and 24 police personnel injured. ADGP Prisons Kuchchanna Srinivas told reporters that some prisoners went on a rampage and indulged in stone pelting to protest the shifting of two undertrials from the jail to Gulbarga this morning. Taking advantage of the trouble,some inmates tried to escape,but police foiled their attempt,he said.

Man set on fire by neighbours

BHADOHI: A 60-year-old man suffered serious burn injuries after he was set on fire by some people over a water dispute in Raipur village here on Friday,police said. Sakharam Shukla,a tea vendor,was set on fire by his neighbours after an argument between them over taking water from a hand pump,they said.

Man kills 75-yr-old father for coughing

NAGERCOIL: A 75-year-old man in Vadaseri area near here was allegedly murdered by his son as he was disturbed by his fathers persistent cough,police said Friday. Arokia John confessed that despite medication,the cough of his father Maria Bhagyanathan could not be controlled,police said,adding that he used a boulder on Thursday to kill him.

Woman raped and killed in Tamil Nadu

ERODE: A 45-year-old woman was raped and murdered in Bhavani taluk in the district,police said Friday. The body of Palaniammal,a daily wager who lived alone in Vairamangalam village,was found on Friday in front of her house in a pool of blood,police said. The victim,who bore injuries on her chest and severe injuries on the back of her head,could have been pushed to the ground and strangulated after being raped,police said.

Infosys techie jumps to death

HYDERABAD: A 23-year-old female software engineer working with Infosys at Gachibowli here allegedly committed suicide on Friday by jumping from a multi-storeyed building in her office campus,police said. Sahiti Vyasam,with Infosys since 2009,jumped from the fourth floor of the building and died on her way to a nearby hospital,Raidurgam Inspector of Police M Ravichandan Reddy told PTI.

Army rescues tourists stranded in snowfall

NEW DELHI: The Indian Army rescued a group of tourists after they were stranded due to unprecedented snowfall in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The 13 tourists,including two women,were returning from Shungatser Lake on February 16 when their vehicle got stuck in three feet of snow, Army officials said here Friday. A team from the nearby Army unit was rushed to the spot to ensure their safety and rescue, the officials said.
