The Bengaluru police on Wednesday detained two people in connection with the incident where a 29-year-old man, the son of a retired police officer, was allegedly hacked to death within the limits of Bandepalya police station on Monday night.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, identified as Shabbir, a resident of Hosarod, and the accused were habitual offenders, and the murder was the result of longstanding enmity and gang rivalry between them, the police said. Other accused have been identified, and efforts are on to nab them, the police said.
Shabbir, who ran a junk shop near his residence, was the son of a retired assistant sub-inspector who served with the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP).
According to the police, the incident occurred around 11 pm on Mangammanapalya Main Road as Shabbir was returning home with five friends in an autorickshaw after visiting a relative at Victoria Hospital. “On the way, eight to ten assailants who arrived in auto-rickshaws and on motorcycles intercepted the vehicle near a petrol bunk and forcibly dragged Shabbir onto the road. He was then assaulted with deadly weapons in full public view. Shabbir sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot, while five others were injured. The attackers fled the scene soon after,” said an officer.
Preliminary investigations revealed Shabbir and the accused fought just two days before his murder due to personal grudges, the police said.
Seemant Kumar Singh, Bengaluru Police Commissioner, said the crime should not have occurred, particularly as they were already offenders.
“This is not tolerable. I have instructed the police to ensure immediate arrests. Not just arrests, but strict and serious action will be taken. We will also look into any lapses on the part of the police,” he said.
A murder case has been registered at Bandepalya police station. Multiple teams have been formed to trace the remaining accused, and CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being examined, the police said.
