MUZAFFARNAGAR UP: In another instance of moral policing,a self-styled caste council or khap has banned girls from wearing jeans,blaming the attire for incidents of eve teasing and young couples eloping in a village in the district. The panchayat led by Battisa Khap Council head Baba Suraj in Bhenswal village passed the diktat which claimed that wearing jeans had a bad effect on young women and eve-teasing incidents had increased due to their objectionable clothes.

Gogois wife files FIR against peasant leader

GUWAHATI: Dolly Gogoi,wife of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi,on Sunday filed an FIR against peasant leader Akhil Gogoi for alleging that the couple own houses in the United States. Dolly in the FIR with case number 48/11 at the Basistha police station stated that the allegation levelled by Akhil Gogoi was false and misleading,officer-in-charge S Deka said. Akhil had recently alleged that the chief minister and his wife were owners of two houses in the United States where their daughter resides.

Mine defused on Indo-Pak border

JAMMU: The Border Security Force on Sunday defused a mine near the Indo-Pak border in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir,averting a possible tragedy. A farmer found a mine in his agriculture field in Regal area in the district and informed BSF troops,police said. The mine was later defused by the BSF jawans.

Indian Air Force Chief arrives in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: Indian Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik on Sunday arrived in Sri Lanka,beginning his four day official visit in which he will meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa along with top officials. Naik was accorded a welcome by his Lankan counterpart and Acting Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonethilake at the airport.

Bihar: Rs 16.21 lakh looted from banks

PATNA: Gunmen looted Rs 16.21 lakh from two banks during the past 24 hours in Bihar,the police said on Sunday. Dacoits looted Rs 6.58 lakh after breaking open the doors of a rural bank under Reega police station area of Bihars Sitamarhi district early on Sunday. In the other incident,armed men raided the Bank of India branch at Kanti village in Muzaffarpur district and decamped with Rs 9.63 lakh.

Car falls into canal,5 of family dead

AMBALA: Five members of a family were killed when a car in which they were travelling skidded off the road and plunged into a canal here on Sunday. The dead included two women and a child,the police said,adding the accident happened near Nurpur village on Ambala City-Shahbad road. The dead included Jaswinder Singh an NRI,his wife,daughter and brother-in-law.

2 dead in kite-flying mishaps in Valsad

VALSAD: Two persons died,while over a dozen were injured in accidents related to kite-flying during Uttarayan festival in the district,police said on Sunday. Ajay Shah,a class 11th student,died after his throat was slit by the string of a kite,while he was on a motorcycle,near Dunri village. In another incident,Lalan Sinha of Kocharva village fell into a well while flying a kite and died.
