In a major crackdown on organised crime, Delhi Police has arrested four alleged members of the Sonu Dariyapur gang from Outer North Delhi, and — in a separate operation — also apprehended a proclaimed offender linked to the Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu gang at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, officers said.
Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested Manoj Rathee (33), an alleged active member of the Sangwan gang on January 9 after he was intercepted at the IGI Airport.
Rathee, a resident of Bahadurgarh in Haryana, had been absconding abroad and was declared a proclaimed offender, officers said. Rathee was arrested on the basis of a look out circular, police said on Monday.
According to police, Rathee was wanted in a 2021 murder case registered at Najafgarh police station and in multiple Arms Act cases, including one from Baba Haridas Nagar.
Investigators said he had fled the country after his associates were arrested in February 2024 with a cache of illegal pistols meant to be supplied to him. During his absence, he allegedly continued to work for the Sangwan gang from abroad, coordinating the procurement of illegal weapons.
In a separate operation, police busted what they described as an active extortion module of the Dariyapur gang. Acting on tip-offs, a specialised patrolling team was deployed on the night of January 16 near the Shamshan Ghat area on Khera Khurd Road.
Around 10:10 pm, the team intercepted three men riding a motorcycle in suspicious circumstances. A search led to the recovery of illegal firearms, following which they were detained and an FIR under the Arms Act was registered at Narela Industrial Area police station, officers said.
The accused were identified as Rajat alias Gabbru (22), Anurag alias Hunny (22), and Aryan (22), all residents of Delhi. During questioning, they told police about another one of their associates — Sushil Bist (27) — who was arrested in a follow-up raid, officers said.
Police said Bist is a habitual offender with a criminal history spanning 34 cases of robbery, snatching and violations of the Arms Act. Further, investigators said the arrested men are allegedly active members of the Dariyapur gang and were involved in extortion rackets targeting businessmen in Rohini and other parts of Outer North Delhi.
The accused have been remanded to police custody for two days to trace the source of the weapons, recover more arms allegedly hidden at various locations, and identify other gang members and potential extortion targets, police said.
