Antonys Oman visit to focus on defence ties
NEW DELHI: Defence Minister A K Antony will leave for a two-day official visit to Oman on Monday that will boost defence ties between the countries. Antony will hold talks with his Oman counterpart Sayyid Badr bin Saud bin Harib Al Busaidi to promote military cooperation. Oman remains the only country in the Gulf region with which India has a vibrant military cooperation.
Super 30 in TIME list of Best in Asia
PATNA: Bihars Super 30 institute being run by mathematician Anand Kumar has found mention in Time magazines list of Best in Asia 2010. The Super 30 batch has so far sent over 170 students to IITs in the past seven years. An article in the magazine says: Every year,some 230,000 students take the notoriously difficult exam for a spot in one of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology,but only 5,000 pass. Last year,30 of them came from one coaching center in Patna,capital of the impoverished north Indian state of Bihar.
Panel says no to uranium mining
NEW DELHI: Following a meeting of the Standing Committee of Wildlife,the apex body for environmental clearances,a proposal for uranium mining in Meghalaya has been turned down. The proposal was by the Department of Atomic Energy for exploratory drilling for uranium in Rongcheng Plateau in Balphakram National Park,South Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.
Soon,a model KV in every region
NEW DELHI: A model Kendriya Vidyalaya for inclusive education would be set up in every region to ensure a barrier-free and highly facilitatory educational environment to differently abled children,the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan KVS Board of Governors decided on Friday. Eighteen such schools would be set up with special learning equipment,access and other facilities.
SC rejects Anand Mohans bail plea
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the bail plea of former Lok Sabha MP Anand Mohan,facing life imprisonment in the 1994 murder case of the then Gopalganj district magistrate G Krishnaiah. A Bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A R Dave rejected the plea of senior counsel K T S Tulsi that Mohan was entitled to bail pending the hearing of his appeal against the conviction. The Patna High Court had in December 2008 commuted the death sentence of Mohan to life imprisonment and acquitted six others in the case.
Prabhakaran mother: SC rejects PIL
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking a direction to the Central government for bringing back to the country Parvathi Ammal,86-year old ailing mother of slain LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran,for medical treatment. A Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and H L Dattu refused to entertain the petition and instead directed the petitioner,R Karuppan,an advocate,to approach the state government.
India to continue trek to Siachen
NEW DELHI: India will continue to conduct its annual civilian trek to Siachen glacier for the fourth consecutive year with a 35-strong team expected to scale the highest battlefield in the world this October. While Pakistan has been protesting against the civilian trek on what it calls disputed territory,the Army has made the expedition an annual feature.
