Direct tax mop-up may miss target
NEW DELHI: The direct tax collection for 2009-10 is likely to be around Rs 3.80 lakh crore,missing the revised target by Rs 7,000 crore. The final figure will be available in mid-May when all the transactions are compiled. As on date it is somewhere around Rs 3.78 lakh crore8230;it may be Rs 3.80 lakh crore, CBDT chairman S S N Moorthy said at an Assocham seminar.
Britains INQ to sell unlocked phones
NEW DELHI: British phone maker INQ said it has launched unlocked versions of its handsets,which were earlier only available with Aircel network,in the open market to tap the countrys burgeoning telecom market. Locked phones cant be used with all telecom networks and usually come with the connection. However,after the handset is unlocked it can used for any telecom service.
IOC to buy RIL gas to replace costlier fuel
NEW DELHI: State-owned Indian Oil Corp IOC will buy 1.6 million cubic metres of natural gas a day from Reliance Industries RIL to replace costlier liquid fuel at its refineries. IOC currently uses crude oil or fuel oil for production of hydrogen at its refineries,and natural gas from RILs eastern offshore KG-D6 field will replace the costlier fuel,a senior company official said.
Steel consumption up 9.6 pc in April
NEW DELHI: Steel consumption rose 9.6 per cent to 4.14 million tonnes mt in April 2010,on account of steady demand from sectors such as automobiles,white goods and construction. Consumption was at 3.78 million tonnes in the year-ago period. Production during the reporting period rose 5.3 per cent to 4.9 mt over 4.6 mt tonne in April last year,according to
the provisional data of the steel ministry.

The 150 cc segment of the Indian motorcycle industry has grown over two-fold in the last three years and it is expected to grow at this rate. Job index rises for 5th month,up 7 pc in Apr
NEW DELHI: Riding on improving business confidence,Corporate India8217;s online hiring activity rose for the fifth month in a row,leading recruitment services provider Monster India said. The Monster Employment Indexclimbed by 7 per cent to 125 in April,from 117 in March.
Commexes turnover up 53 pc in April
NEW DELHI: Buoyed by non-agricultural commodities,the turnover of 23 commodity exchanges in the country rose by 53 per cent to Rs 7,48,414 crore in April,the FMC said.
