Ranbaxy to recall drug from UK

New Delhi: UKs drug regulator has asked Indian pharmaceutical firm Ranbaxy to recall three batches of its anti-cholesterol tablets,Pravastatin on failure to update safety warnings in its information leaflets. As per information available on the UK-based Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency MHRA,it has asked Ranbaxy to recall three batches of Pravastatin 10 mg and 40 mg tablets. The regulator said patient information leaflets PILs have not been updated to include approved safety warnings,some of which were mandatory and initiated by the European Medicines Agency EMA. It has also asked pharmacists to quarantine all remaining stock of the above batches and return it to the wholesaler from which it was purchased,it added. Ranbaxy officials could not be reached for comments.

US pleased with TAPI agreement

Washington: The US has said it is pleased with a recent agreement on an ambitious four-nation gas pipeline involving India,Pakistan,Afghanistan and Turkmenistan,hoping that the multi-billion-dollar project would change the face of the economic condition of the region. We are pleased with the initial agreements that have been signed on the TAPI Turkmenistan,Afghanistan,Pakistan and India project, the state department said. It is important to remember that pipelines are long-term projects with long-term horizons,and that the immense effort involved could produce long-term benefits for Turkmenistan and the region, it said.

Handloom silk firms on strike

Kumbakonam: Handloom silk manufacturers in Tamil Nadu began a one-week strike from Saturday,protesting against high raw material prices that they claim is expected to cause a loss of about Rs 90 crore a day to state manufacturers and Rs 3 crore in wages per day to weavers. The price of raw material for handloom silks have risen rapidly over the past year.

A kg of raw Kora silk,which in January 2010 cost Rs 1,750,now costs Rs 3,3008243;,said president of Handloom Silk Manufacturers Association,K G Ramaswamy.
