Four policemen, who were arrested in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, have been reinstated by the state government. While two of them were granted bail by the Supreme Court, the other two got bail in the Gujarat High Court.
Sources said all four policemen sub-inspector N V Chauhan, constables Ajay Parmar and Santram Sharma and police inspector V A Rathod were taken back in service a few months ago.
Home Secretary S K Nanda said,I do not know the names, but so many people are taken back in service following review of their suspension by a committee after a 90-day period. If the committee does not enforce the suspension, the person can be taken back in service.
Director General of Police Amitabh Pathak confirmed that some police officers arrested in the Sohrabuddin encounter case, who were granted bail by courts, had been taken back into service after review of their suspension. The DGP said they were monitored so that they did not harm the case. Since these policemen were released on bail by courts,it was clear they were not going to harm the case,he added.
Chauhan and Rathod were granted bail by the Supreme Court whereas Sharma and Parmar were given bail by the HC.
All four were named in the chargesheets filed by Gujarat CID Crime, which first probed the case. However, the CBI,which took over the probe on the SC orders, gave a clean chit to three of them, barring Chauhan, who still remains an accused in the case.
The CBI had held the three policemen were merely following the orders of their seniors.
Chauhan later got the bail from the SC in October last year.
According to the CBI,Chauhan was involved in disposing of Kauser Bis remains after her killing in 2005,when he was in the Anti-Terrorism Squad ATS.
Sources said Chauhan has been posted in Bharuch district while Rathod and Sharma are in Gandhinagar. Parmar has been posted at Ahmedabad police headquarters.
CBI sleuths, jail staff trade blows over Chudasama
CBI sleuths traded blows with Nadiad sub-jail staff on Monday morning when they went there to fetch Abhay Chudasama, the IPS officer who is an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, sources said.
The CBI team, which went there to take away Chudasama to Mumbai, had to beat a retreat and return empty-handed.
Following the transfer of the Sohrabuddin case trial to Mumbai on the Supreme Court orders a few months ago,the accused policemen were shifted from jails in Gujarat to Taloja jail in Mumbai. Chudasama, however, was allowed to stay back at Nadiad sub-jail since he was undergoing treatment in Ahmedabad.
According to sources,CBI sleuths landed at Nadiad jail in the morning and asked the jail authorities to call Chudasama, but he refused to come out of his cell. After waiting for long, the CBI team took up the matter with the jail superintendent and tried to move in. However, they were stopped by the jail guards, which led to fisticuffs between the the two sides. Sources said Chudasama remained seated inside his cell all this while, shouting at the CBI team and asking it to go back.
A team of CBI had gone to Nadiad jail to shift him to Mumbai jail. He was allowed to stay there on medical grounds, but now he is fit and should be shifted there as soon as possible, a CBI official said.
Nadiad jail authorities, meanwhile, denied there was any scuffle. Nadiad sub-jail superintendent N A Desai said,The CBI team did come to take away Chudasama to Mumbai. But there are medical grounds in his case. He will undergo tests tomorrow. If he is fit,we will send him with the CBI to Mumbai.
