The Asom Gana Parishad AGP has finally decided to call off its alliance with the BJP. While the steering committee of the regional party took this decision Sunday evening,it forwarded the same to the general house of the party to formally ratify it next month.
The AGP decision came in the wake of growing discontent among party workers who complained that it was the saffron party that had benefited the most out of the tie-up in the Lok Sabha polls. While the BJPs tally went up from two to four out of 14 seats in Assam, the AGP could win just one against two it earlier held.
The two parties had forged an alliance on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections last year with the understanding that while the BJP would be the dominant partner in the Lok Sabha polls, the AGP would lead the alliance in the 2011 Assembly elections.
While it is a fact that the BJP had gained more at the cost of our party in the last Lok Sabha polls, certain comments made by Nitin Gadkari during his visit to Assam earlier this month only revealed how ignorant he is about Assam and the AGP, said Atul Bora, party general secretary.
Gadkari had in a press conference said the BJP was capable of going it alone in the Assembly elections next year.
