PUNE, Dec 1: Even as the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC is slated to initiate the retendering process for the ambitious water supply and sewerage scheme by inviting fresh bids, the civic body is facing intense pressure from the State Government to select any one of the six consortia of Indian and foreign companies 8211; despite their earlier tenders having been formally cancelled.
According to highly-placed sources in the PMC, the Chief Secretary P Subramaniam and Additional Secretary Ranganathan will hold a meeting with the officials on December 3 to review the privatisation of the water scheme.
It may be recalled that after vehement opposition to the controversial Rs 735-crore multi-crore water supply and sewerage project in the PMC8217;s general body meeting, Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal had formally cancelled the tenders and said that the revised report would be tabled within three to four months.
Similarly the five-member committee appointed by Agarwal to scrutinise the scheme had suggested a redraft of the entire project. Political parties had charged the PMC with inflating the project cost by Rs 200 crore to suit certain companies. Six consortia involving Indian and foreign companies had been shortlisted for competitive bidding based on their technical expertise and experience in private power projects.
However, while Kirloskar consultants is re-drafting the project and is expected to submit the report within two months, the State Government has been pressurising the PMC to select any one of the six consortia during the retendering process which should not be open to any other companies. The PMC, it is learnt, has resented the pressure tactics, and is scheduled to oppose the State Government move.
