PUNE, Sept 22: The civic administration was literally stumped for a reply when the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) members grilled them endlessly about the water supply department’s indifference to tackle the `polluted’ water problem at the Pashan filtration plant, leading to an adjournment of the House over the issue.

Raising the query at the general body meeting today, corporator Swati Nimhan lashed out against the water supply department’s engineer, additional city engineer Ramesh Ghodke who allegedly did not initiate repairs on the over 100-year-old filtration beds despite orders issued by Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal.

The Pashan water pumping station has four filtration beds which have been rendered useless due to sheer negligence by the PMC. However, the officials had turned a Nelson’s eye to the repair works which led to residents at Pashan, Sus, Balewadi, Sutarwadi and other areas receiving worm-infested water.

An irate Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Bodke who is also the standing committee chairman told the House that water supply department officials were so casual about the issue that some had even remarked that they had not taken any action since they had not received complaints from the residents. While Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor told the house that it was technically and financially not feasible to keep the Pashan water pumping station open, PMC members Hiraman Shinde, Dutta Gaikwad and Shiva Mantri pooh-poohed his reply and alleged that they had not maintained the plant since they wanted to shut it down.

The meeting was rocked by a heated debate over the issue where BJP corporator Vijay Kale charged the administration with not deputing enough personnel to maitain the plant. Corporator Hanumant Darekar too pointed out that lack of security personnel at the Pashan lake where raw water was lifted for purification at the plant had led to truck drivers further polluting the water by washing the trucks in it.

Chandrakant Chhajed, leader of the house in the PMC too demanded that action should be taken against the errant officials who even refused to obey the Municipal Commissioner’s orders.
