A group of villagers sits in the shadow of a temple, playing a game of cards on a hot day in Yavatmal. Oblivious of the poll winds that have begun to hot up, they prefer to play the cards close to their chest.

8216;8216;If we had work, we wouldn8217;t have been seen playing cards like this,8217;8217; says Bapurao Pudke, a farmer. That8217;s one of the problems in this village rehabilitated after it was washed away in floods a few years ago. Pudke, 68, has seen many elections.

8216;8216;Our MP Uttamrao Patil never came here, but our village has always voted for him,8217;8217; Pudke says. 8216;8216;The rural voter isn8217;t really as discerning as he is generally made out to be,8217;8217; says Bapurao. 8216;8216;They don8217;t vote for a thought or an ideology, they vote for the party or the person. Here, they vote for Patil because he is a Kunbi,8217;8217; he adds.

Bapurao is a follower of Dalit movement started by the Maharashtrian trinity of Shahu-Ambedkar-Phule. Nursing a subtle contempt for the political class, he supports Lyndgoh8217;s recent opinion about politicians. 8216;8216;What he said was correct,8217;8217; he says with a smile.

Educated up to seventh standard, Bapurao bitterly recalls the Janpad days when he lost a teacher8217;s job to an upper caste. 8216;8216;I am a supporter of the ST-ST-OBC cause,8217;8217; he says.

8216;8216;Vajpayee is a good individual, but his partymen raising Sonia8217;s foreign origin is wrong,8217;8217; he says. He describes Advani8217;s rath yatra as a political stunt. 8216;8216;Compare it with Baba Amte8217;s Bharat Jodo and decide.8217;8217;

Bapurao alleges that the BJP-Sena nominee, Haribhau Rathod, is too Mumbai-centric. Rathod, like Patil, is also accused of not visiting the constituency he dreams of leading.

Bapurao gets cynical when asked what he thinks of the Telgi scandal. 8216;8216;This is a country of scandals. So, what8217;s the surprise?8217;
