MUMBAI, July 11: Pivotals declined further on the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE today on profit-taking mainly due to end-account and selling pressure by financial institutions. Resuming subdued, share prices dropped during the earlier part of the session but recovered slightly at the end.

The BSE senstive index opened at 4372.75 and fluctuated between 4372.75 and 4301.93 before recovering at the fag end to 4321.98 with a net loss of 56.39 points compared to the previous close of 4378.37. The BSE-100 closed at 1875.24 over the yesterday8217;s close of 1896.83, losing 21.59 points.

Brokers said apart from end-account considerations the sentiment was also affected on announcement of Prime Minister I K Gujral that the government will reduce subsidies on petroleum prices drastically. The absence of market operators coupled with profit-booking by bull operators and domestic financial institutions aided the downtrend.

The market opened on a weak note as most of the investors including domestic financial institutions were busy squaring up their positions. FIIs bought a sizeable chunk of HDFC shares.

ACC eased by Rs 4.50 to Rs 1526.50, Bajaj Auto by Rs 60 to Rs 893.25, Colgate by Rs 4.75 to Rs 314. However, Larsen edged up Rs by 5.50 to Rs 268, Bombay Dyeing Rs 3.50 at Rs 113 and HDFC Rs 244.25 at Rs 4747.25 on short covering. Castrol, Siemens, and Tata Tea also remained better. In cash, Bayer declined by Rs 186.50 to Rs 2023.50, Cipla by Rs 21.75 to Rs 753.25 and Coluor Chem by Rs 95 to Rs 3605. Infosys Tech improved by Rs 173 to Rs 2440, NIIT by Rs 30.50 to Rs 460.50 and Wipro by Rs 13.75 to Rs 680.

On the National Stock Exchange NSE, share prices weakened on fresh spell of selling pressure and closed with substantial losses. The NSE-50 index closed at 1221.10, still showing a setback of 18.05. The midcap index closed at 1305.40, revealing a fall of 8.80. The total turnover was Rs 1,621.27 crore.
