The Karnataka Police Monday booked former minister and BJP leader B Sriramulu for allegedly disclosing details of a minor rape victim. The First Information Report (FIR) was registered under Section 23 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
The former MLA had made the remarks during a protest held at Ballari on Saturday. The BJP had organised the protest following a clash between supporters of Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy and BJP MLA Janardhan Reddy, which had resulted in the death of a Congress worker on New Year’s Day.
In his address, Sriramulu attacked the local administration and the police, after which he alleged that Ballari was turning into a hub of drugs. He then cited the case of a girl who was allegedly drugged and raped, and went on to mention her name, the school she studied at, the locality of her house and the caste of the victim.
The police, who were at the spot, registered a suo motu complaint. An FIR was registered at the Women and Child Police Station, Ballari.
“Revealing the identity of a Pocso victim is a cognisable offence. Based on the complaint of a police staff present at the protest venue, an FIR was registered,” a police source said.
