Kareena Kapoor Khan has always advocated for healthy, seasonal, and home-cooked meals. As such, when she was asked to pick a vegetable that is a “superpower”, she was quick to side with lauki or bottle gourd. “I am a big fan of lauki. I feel it is a gut-friendly vegetable. It has helped me…Sometimes, I don’t take medication, but I would have dudhi soup, a plain lauki salad or a lauki sabzi. It really helps me. I think it is the superpower vegetable. Not cool, but it’s what it is. I think the taste…it comes straight from the farm…and it has got that nice taste,” said Kareena in rapid fire with CNBC TV18 in 2023.
Is lauki really a healthy superfood?
Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, shared that lauki is not a very glamorous-sounding food, but Indian kitchens have relied on it for ages. “Light, soothing, and gentle to digest, this simple vegetable often proves to be stronger than most of the trendy foods we know about. Though plain in flavour, lauki is packed with health advantages that make it deserving of a place in the diet on a regular basis,” said Sheikh.
Lauki is over 90 per cent water, making it very hydrating, Sheikh said, adding that this ensures proper fluid balance in the body and aids digestion. “Being low-calorie and high-fibre, lauki keeps the stomach light while also enhancing metabolism. Its cooling nature makes it a reliable option during scorching summer and steamy monsoon, when the body requires food that can be easily digested,” Sheikh elaborated.

According to Sheikh, regular consumption of lauki helps remove toxins from the body and maintain a clean digestive system. “It maintains healthy blood pressure levels since it contains a lot of potassium, which helps balance the excess sodium content,” said Sheikh.
When trying to lose weight, lauki is perfect because it is filling yet light. Sheikh mentioned that it is also easy to digest. “So, it is useful for individuals suffering from acidity, constipation, or after an illness recovery. It is even helpful for people who need a boost of energy and want to have healthier skin,” said Sheikh.
This vegetable is suitable for all ages, from kids to seniors. It is particularly beneficial for people who are dealing with lifestyle disorders like diabetes, heart disease, or obesity, Sheikh mentioned.
“Its neutral flavour allows it to be used in a variety of recipes, and it can be turned into soups, curries, raitas, or even smoothies with ease. The only thing to watch out for is to not consume lauki that has a bitter taste, since it can be unsafe to eat,” said Sheikh.
