The Asom Satra Mahasabha, the apex body of all satras (monasteries which propagate neo-Vaishnavism), in Assam has approached the army for protection against illegal migrants.

“The situation is quite alarming in several districts. We have told the army to include satras in the Sadbhavna scheme for protection from encroachers,’’ said Mahasabha vice-president Bhaba Goswami, adding that “around 50 per cent of the total land owned by the satras in the state have come under illegal occupation.’’

The Sadbhavna scheme was launched by the Army to create goodwill among the people. This includes free medical camps, distribution of medicines and also at times joy rides and trips for children.

The institution of satra was founded by saint Srimanta Sankardeva in the 16th century during the Bhakti movement. They were the principal agencies through which art and cultural activities were pursued, propagated and passed on from generation to generation in addition to the pursuit of religion. And most of the land for these satras were donated by kings and nobles.

Occupation by illegal migrants from Bangladesh has happened for the first time in their history raising concerns about the future of their existence.

Goswami, who was on his way from Moscow, accompanied by three other delegates from Assam, said they expect the migrants to be flushed out once the institutions are included in the Sadbhavna scheme. They said that the satras in the districts of Nalbari, Barpeta, Nagaon, Dhubri and Kamrup have been particularly affected and requires immediate attention.

The move by the mahasabha is a grim reminder of the problem of illegal influx into the country. Assam has been particularly affected which was why the SC struck down the Illegal Migrants’ Determination by Tribunals Act last year.
