CHANDIGARH, Dec 17: Within days of a news item in Newsline regarding the quot;looting and manhandlingquot; of three British nationals by the city police, the UT Administration has suspended a deputy superintendent of police and an inspector.
A statement issued by the Administration said that DSP Central Surjit Singh and Inspector Ved Prakash had been suspended for quot;misrepresentation and misconductquot;.
An inquiry into the incident by SDM South Ashish Kundra found that the police had concocted a story about the arrest of the three British nationals from different places. quot; From the evidence, it is clear that the three were arrested together. The sequence of events as depicted in the three FIRs is untrue, quot; it was added.
Meanwhile, DSP Detective Daya Nand has been given the additional charge of DSP Central till further orders. He has also been asked to supervise the investigation of the cases against these British nationals. An inquiry has also been ordered into the complaint by the three about the loss of their money and valuables.
On December 1, the police had arrested Samuel Allen under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances NDPS Act, while Tobias Nenning and Alexander Lawson were arrested under the Arms Act. The trio had charged the police with misbehaviour, looting and manhandling them. Incidentally, Surjit Singh was also probing the alleged assault on Sector 3 SHO Jaswant Singh. While there is no significant progress in the case, Jaswant Singh has been transferred to the Sector 26 Police Lines, according to sources.
