WASHINGTON, JAN 13: US has sharply raised the fee for filing a citizenship application by 130 dollars, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service INS said today.
The application will now cost 225 dollars against the present 95 dollars.
The hike, which would come into effect from Friday onwards, became imperative because of heavy backlog of 1.8 million applications for US citizenship in 1998, the INS said adding it processed a record 1.6 million citizenship applications in 1997.
It estimates that 700,000 people will seek to become naturalized citizens in 1999.
