New Delhi, Oct 24: It was only the day before that coach Anshuman Gaekwad wanted an extra day of practice for the Dhaka-bound Indian cricket team in the capital. But after what happened today at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium grounds, the Indians may never want to stop over here ever again.
Quite like what happened here at the Palam Air Force ground last year before the Sahara Cup, when an unruly and overenthusiastic bunch of fans prevented the cricketers from completing their practice session after the team had gone through their batting and bowling routine.
Skipper Azharuddin echoed the side8217;s dismay, saying: 8220;I am very disappointed8230; that8217;s not the way you practice.8221;
8220;I am sorry8230; but the organisers Sports Authority of India just didn8217;t care about what was happening on the ground,8221; he added. 8220;If they have to organise this way, they better not organise,8221; a disgusted Gaekwad chimed in.
Last year at the Palam ground, Indian Air Force personnel had at least managed to get the crowd in onecorner and help the team go through a complete session. This time, however, the security arrangements were such that fielding practice in the final session had to be aborted.
However, the autograph hunters and star-struck fans notwithstanding, Azharuddin managed to stick to the 8220;we-shall-overcome8221; theme saying, 8220;I am looking forward to our match opening tie against Australia and we8217;re confident of putting up a good show.8221;
Azharuddin added that he was happy with the fitness of his side. 8220;We have got talent, we have match-winning players and there is no need to worry,8221; he said.
The skipper also indicated that he was not too worried about the new tie-breaker rule, saying, 8220;When you don8217;t have time to play, this is the best way. One way or other you have to decide the winner.8221;
The side leaves for Dhaka tomorrow afternoon.
