MUMBAI, May 21: The ongoing Elf-Vengsarkar U-14 cricket tournament has been hard hit by the absence of quality umpires. Umpiring errors have plagued the event ever since it got under way four days ago. Yesterday, the organisers of the event were put in a fix as there were no umpires for the Ajit Wadekar XI vs Padmakar Shivalkar XI game at Karnatak ground. It resulted in the coaches at the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy EVCA substituting as umpires.
While EVCA claims to have informed the Mumbai Cricket Association8217;s Umpires Board Committee well in advance about the rules and the fixtures, the response has been unsatisfactory.
quot; The very purpose of holding the event is being defeated, quot; thundered Dilip Vengsarkar while speaking to Express Newsline this afternoon. The former Test star said that the only assistance they sought from MCA was provision of qualified umpires. quot; These kids ought to be guided well in terms of rules and regulations but the MCA seems to be making a mockery of it,quot; headded.
Today, a peculiar situation arose when the umpires betrayed ignorance of the tournament rules 8212; of having four fielders in the inner circle. quot;We had handed the tournament rules in advance to the MCA,quot; informed Makarand Waingankar, EVCA co-ordinator.
