Boca Raton (Florida), March 22: Two-time Olympic swimmer Giovanni Linscheer has been killed in a two-car crash.
Linscheer, 27, was driving in the wrong lane early Sunday on Interstate 95 when he crashed head-on into a van and both vehicles exploded into flames, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Linscheer, who had been cited 16 times for traffic infractions, and Waldemar Derby Jr, 30, the van driver, both died in the wreck on the wet highway.
Three witnesses said they saw Linscheer’s sport utility vehicle heading south in the Northbound Lanes, FHP Lt Pembrook Burrows said the agency is awaiting the results of toxicology reports to determine if the crash was alcohol-related.
Linscheer was a bronze medallist at the 1995 Pan American Games and was twice named an All-American while swimming at the University of Florida.
