VADODARA, Dec 1: With the arrest of two more Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists on Tuesday, the number of those held in connection with the assault on Christian convention here on the night of October 29 has risen to seven. Five VHP-Bajrang Dal activists had been arrested on November 5.

The arrests were been made on the basis of an FIR filed by Ramanbhai Vasava, whose leg was reportedly fractured in the VHP attack. Vasava had alleged in the FIR that 25 to 30 people describing themselves as VHP-Bajrang Dal activists had launched themselves on the delegates housed in the Adarsh Hindi Vidyalaya, beaten them up and snatched their luggage and copies of the Bible.

The role of police came under a cloud over the incident following saffron leader Niraj Jain8217;s claim that the police had accompanied his men; the police, however, denied the charge.

But a few missionaries, including Mother Grace Cherian and her brother T George alleged that they had been slapped by VHP-Dal men even in the police van and made to wait in the Fatehgunj police outpost till morning while none of the accused persons were detained or questioned.

The police initiated action only after wide coverage of the incident in the local as well as national media and several organisations, including the National Commission for Minorities, asked the government to identify the guilty and punish them.
