
PUNE, April 7: Chess star and International Master Abhijit Kunte, table tennis player Rohit Chaudhary and cyclists Ramesh Deokar and Meeta Rajput are among nine players from Pune honoured with the Shiv Chhatrapati State Sport Awards for the year 1997-98.
Two other Awards — the Daddoji Kondeo for coaches and one for administrators — also went to candidates from the city according to the list comprising 40 sports persons approved by the State Sports Minister Chandrakant Khaire today in Mumbai.
The Award carries Rs 25,000 along with a citation and is the highest State award in the field of sports. As many as 22 disciplines were considered for the awards which involves assessing the performance of each candidate over the last five years. Marks scored for achievement, such as medals at national events and international representation among other parameters are totalled. The best three years are taken into account to select awardees. The Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in Aurangabad next month.
