
Top seed Suarabh Patil of Maharashtra cruised into the boys8217; singles Under-16 quarterfinals with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Madhurjya Dutta of Assam in the AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament being played at Harvest Tennis Academy, Jassowal on Tuesday. Patil claimed the first set with an emphatic margin of 6-1 before winning the second set with an identical margin. In another match in the same category, eighth sees Shikhar Kumar of Delhi ended the challenge of Nishchay Rawal of Chandigarh with a 6-1, 6-1 win while SM Abdullah of Andhra Pradesh scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sushanta Mohanty of Haryana.
It was a tough going for Haryana8217;s Resham Singh who had to struggle to score a 6-70, 7-5, 6-3 win over Harry Jindal of Punjab. Resham lost the first set with a margin of 6-7 before fighting his way into the match. Resham then regained his rhythm and won the second set with a margin of 7-5. Resham then claimed the last set 6-3 to cruise into the quarterfinals. In another match of the day, sixth seed Hardarshan Gill of Rajasthan ended the challenge of Abhimanyu Singh of Delhi with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Gill claimed the first set with a margin of 6-2 before winning the second set with a margin of 6-4. In another match of the day, third seed Nikhit Prasad of Andhra Pradesh stormed his way into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tushar Madelkar of Chandigarh. In the boys8217; Under-14 category, top seed Vishal Passi of Maharashtra paved his way into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Manish Kumar of Delhi. Passi won the first set with a margin of 6-4 before winning the second set 6-1. In another encounter of the day, Shashank Nautiyal of Delhi ended the challenge of seventh seed Basil Khuma of Mizoram with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win.
In the girls8217; Under-14 category, top seed Parminder Kaur of Chandigarh ended the challenge of Chavvi Saxena of Chandigarh with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win. In another encounter in the same category sixth seed Rajbir Kaur of Punjab defeated Shivani Dabas of Delhi 6-3, 6-4. Kaur claimed the first set with a margin of 6-3 before claiming the second set by a margin of 6-4. Spinning a web around the Assam batsmen, Gaurav Gambhir scalped six wickets with his off spin bowling to steer Punjab towards an outright win against Assam by a mammoth 565 runs in the knock-out stage of the Under-22 C K Nayudu Tournament in Kolkata.
In reply to Punjab8217;s total of 575 runs for the loss of four wickets in the second innings, Assam could not stand against the deadly bowling of Gaurav and were bowled out for 190 runs. Earlier, Sarul Kanwar 172 and taruwar Kohli 196 smashed centuries to help Punjab post a mammoth score of 575 runs for the loss of four wickets.
