Parasakthi undergoes 25 modifications to get censor clearance, fans says ‘Better release it as a silent film’

These extensive modifications in the Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Parasakthi have triggered strong reactions online.

Parasakthi stars SivakarthikeyanSudha Kongara revealed that the film has been subjected to slander and defamation, claiming that the attacks are being carried out by a targeted group on social media.

Parasakthi, which was scheduled to release on January 10, remained shrouded in uncertainty after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) delayed issuing its certificate. The situation intensified when one of the biggest releases of the year, Jana Nayagan, was postponed due to a similar censor-related impasse. On Friday, however, the makers of Parasakthi finally breathed a sigh of relief after the censor board cleared the film for release with a UA 16+ certificate, albeit with over 25 cuts.

Soon after, details of the mandated modifications surfaced online. These include changes to a voiceover referencing the imposition of languages in other countries and their subsequent disintegration, altering the phrase ‘Thee Paravattum’ to ‘Neethi Paravattum’, and replacing the words ‘Pattu Nuula’. Several words and phrases were muted, including “Bastard, sirukki, kodila kaaya vatcha thuni maadhiri, kundila komanaththa, okkaali, kundi, nakki, mayiththukku,” and “Hindi kaththukittu,” among others.

Additionally, the sentence “Hindi en kanavai aliththathu” was changed to “En orey kanavai Hindi thinippu eriththathu.”

On the visual front, scenes depicting gunshots involving a mother and child were removed, while visuals of a village massacre were significantly reduced.

The censor board also directed the makers to insert a fiction disclaimer for sequences involving Postal Money Orders, cancellation of UPSC examinations, and language proficiency requirements in railway interviews. The duration of the already inserted disclaimer was extended for better readability, and a voiceover was added throughout, increasing the film’s runtime by 109 seconds.

These extensive modifications have triggered strong reactions online. Reacting on Reddit, one user commented, “The entire movie is going to be muted. Better release it as a silent film.” Another wrote, “This is genuinely the worst censor report I’ve seen. In a film clearly inspired by real events and issues, they’ve cut away so much that it dilutes the impact and core of the story. It’s unbelievable.”

Taking a jibe at the CBFC, another user remarked, “Just cut the whole film and make Sivakarthikeyan a spy in training learning Urdu to go to Pakistan so it fits their definition of nationalism.”

Directed by Sudha Kongara, Parasakthi stars Sivakarthikeyan, Sreeleela, Ravi Mohan, and Atharvaa in lead roles. Set in the 1960s, the film is a political drama. With Jana Nayagan abruptly pushed back due to the CBFC fiasco, Parasakthi has now secured a massive screen count, facing little to no competition at the box office. The advance booking for the film started on the second half of January 9 with over 600 shows alone in Chennai.
