Padmini Mirchandani, director of India Book House, has had a very busy month as her publishing company launched three coffee-table books in quick succession Marwar Painting, Dhurrie: Flatwoven Rugs of India, and Dance of the Peacock. And most of the preparation for these launches was done in her small office at IBH8217;s head office in Nariman Point.

quot;I used to work out of a much larger office at our publishing office in Mahalakshmi, I much preferred that. But that8217;s being renovated at the moment.quot; But even when that is re-done, Padmini will spend about one-third of her time there. quot;I look after both circulation and publishing and now Meera Ahuja will be helping us out with the publishing so I will spend more time at the head office.quot; Meera, who assisted with the writing of Dhurrie8230;, enjoyed the experience so much that she decided to join IBH full time.

In the meantime, her present office has all the essentials that a publisher needs. Her drawers are full of coloured markers, scales and a lupe throughwhich she can look at transparencies. quot;I also keep some personal stuff like my cheque book in my top drawer. But a lot of my belongings are kept in a cabinet.quot; The cabinet is placed over her bookshelf which is full of coffee-table books published by her like Bombay: Cities Within and some not. quot;I like to keep up to date with what is happening in the world of publishing.quot;

But there are two things missing from her office a layout table and a computer. quot;You need a huge space for a layout table. It is essential to cut proofs and do art work.quot; Which is why Padmini hopes to move into a bigger cabin very soon. And for the computer that is at home.

quot;Actually, that normally sits on my desk but I have been working from home quite a bit of late. Since this a corporate office it shuts at 6.00 pm so I often have to take work home.quot;
