MUMBAI, January 9: Fifth seed Srikanth Bakshi, sixth-seeded Vincent Lobo in the men’s and fourth seed Larissa Sadarangini in the women’s, were the three seeded casualties in the BPL Super Series Badminton Tournament.
At the Bombay Gymkhana courts here today, Lobo lost 15-7, 14-17, 6-15 to Kiran Kumar in the first round and joined Rajeev Bagga in the sidelines. The latter lost to 25-year-old Jaison Xavier (Kerala), the state’s third ranked player, who notched up one of his biggest career wins.
Larissa — runner-up at the Natu Memorial in Pune last week — was dismissed 8-11, 5-11 by Sampada Shetye in the pre-quarterfinals.
Bakshi, in the last singles match of the day, was ousted by unseeded Mangrish Palekar (Railways) 15-11, 10-15, 15-12 in 52 minutes.
National champion P Gopi Chand and No 7 seed Dipankar Bhattacharjee suffered minor hiccups before they took their scheduled slots in the last eight.
Gopi had little trouble against Mayur Tawade in the first round, but was stretched by Amrish Shinde in the next.
Shinde set a blistering pace to unsettle the top seed and take the game 18-16. It took a change in pace for Gopi to storm right back, which he did in wrapping up the next two games and the match in a little over an hour.
Bhattacharjee, on the other hand, was in trouble in his first round match against Thomas Kurien. In the decider, after both players shared a game each, Bhattacharjee was down 9-13 at one stage before he crawled back to take the next nine points and the match in 67 minutes. Bhattacharjee runs into 19-year-old Jalandhar boy Sachin Ratti in the quarter-finals.
Ratti, finalist at Pune, faced the toughest first round match against Siddharth Jain but came through 15-9, 2-15, 15-4 in an hour.
