Amid the expansion of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, the Delhi government has ordered the shutdown of 137 Mohalla Clinics across the city, the Health Services Directorate announced on Thursday. With this, the total number of Mohalla Clinics in the Capital has been reduced from 167 to just 30.
The decision regarding the closure was communicated to the Chief District Medical Officers (CDMO) of all districts by the Mohalla Clinic Cell of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), officials said.
Out of the 137 clinics slated for closure, 101 operate out of porta cabins, 30 from rented premises, five in government buildings, and one rent-free in a private building.
According to officials, 41 clinics among the lot that are set to be shut down currently do not have doctors and are non-functional. The remaining 96 are located near Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, rendering them redundant, they added. At its peak, Delhi had over 540 Mohalla clinics.
Authorities said that the remaining clinics could also be shut in the future as the Ayushman Arogya Mandir network expands. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday inaugurated 81 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across Delhi, taking the total number of such primary health care centres in the city to 319.
