
A lower court on Tuesday convicted three persons on charges of murdering a youth in 2005. The three accused 8212; Mewa Ram, Sucha Singh and Darshan Singh 8212; were convicted in the court of additional district and sessions judge, R S Attri. Two of the other accused, Raj Kumar and Maheshi, were acquitted.
There was high drama at the court when the judgment was pronounced as the families of the accused raised a hue and cry.
The quantum on the sentence will be pronounced on November 8.
On December 4, 2005, the bruised body of a youth was found by the police in Sector 39. The body, which had injury marks inflicted with sharp-edged weapons, was found in the bushes near a road from the Grain Market to Maloya village. The word 8216;Raju8217; was tattooed on the arm of the victim.
Later, four brothers, hailing from the Sansi tribe and living in a nearby orchard, were arrested by the police.
The police claimed that during the course of interrogation the accused had confessed to the crime.
According to the police, the deceased had illicit ties with the wives of two brothers of the tribe and Raju was put to death to reclaim the tribe8217;s honour.
During the course of the court proceedings, Jagtar Singh, a witness, had stated that two of the accused 8211; Mewa Ram and Sucha Singh 8211; had made an extrajudicial confession before him.
All the accused were acquitted of another murder charge wherein a beheaded body was found near Maloya village in January 2007.
