You thought life after `the crown’ was one big party? There are some who hate it too. Nicole D’Souza tries to find out why Lymaraina D’Souza vanished suddenly from the limelight

Lymraina D’souza. Miss India-World’ 98 and everyone’s current favourite model. Or is she? The crown adorns her forehead, but she’s being touted as a flop in the industry. We decided to have it clarified.

Down memory lane….

“As far as I can recall I’ve had an excellent childhood. I went to Fort Convent High School. I had very few friends… becoz I found those my age to be very stupid.”

“I spent most of my time reading and very little in extra-curricular activities. My parents were strict disciplinarians till I became 12. In fact I discovered boys only after I joined college.” (Better late than never honey…)

Modelling scenario

“I really don’t understand what people like about this industry. I hate it. You’re treated like trash. You have unearthly work hours. And the bitching isone hell of an ego boost. (Sarcastic, aren’t we?) That’s why I opted out. Miss India is my first and last attempt at modelling.”

Crowning glory

“Becoming Miss India is real hard work. I had no prior experience in modelling. The photos I sent for the competition were from my family album. I entered the competition to get some money so that I could go to the States to study since my parents couldn’t afford it.

I didn’t expect to win. When I did win there were no feelings, just plain numbness and fatigue. All that I wanted to do, even at my victory party was slee..eep.

In Hawaii, at the Miss World, winning was of no importance for me. I’m glad I didn’t win. If I did, I would be miserable. I would have had to give up my dream of studying further. Things never remain the same after you have won the crown. Attending all those charity balls and parties is definitely not my scene.”

Where the party never stops…

“I am leaving for Hawaii on the 19th to go to graduate in Psychology andTravel and Tourism. I’ve got a fully paid scholarship to study there. My dream is to become a child psychologist. I don’t plan to return to India ever. The reasons are plenty. Their (the Hawaiians’) mindset is different. You have the freedom to do as you please with no `moral police’.

I enjoy going wild and the sports out there are just amazing. But the only thing that would make me want to return is my family.”

Love and men

“Believe me when I say that I’ve never had a boyfriend. I fall in love every second day. I’ve tons of guy friends who have liked me. But it has never gone any further. I do like this guy in Hawaii, let’s see if anything works out when I go there. He doesn’t even know that I will be coming there to study. He will get the shock of his life!”

About love? “Don’t know what it feels like as yet. The closest that I have come to being in a relationship is with this one guy at college, who was my best friend then. Becoz everybody labelled us as a couple we stopped seeing eachother.

It’s more about friendship and mutual respect and takes a lot of hardwork and responsibility. Give me a break, I’m only 19, it’s too early to start anything serious. The worst part of it all is that you can’t live with men and can’t live without them.”
