A FIR under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered at City Kharar police station.
The Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police has arrested three vehicle lifters and apprehended a juvenile, and recovered 17 stolen two-wheelers, thereby solving 13 cases of motor vehicle theft across the city.
Police officials said the accused used to target parked two-wheelers from residential and commercial areas and sold them after changing their appearance or using them for personal use.
Police said that acting on specific secret inputs and sustained surveillance, a team of about 20 police personnel carried out a special drive against vehicle lifters and apprehended three adult accused along with one minor from different parts of Chandigarh.
The arrests led to the recovery of 17 stolen motorcycles and scooters, including Honda Activas, Splendor and Platina motorcycles, belonging to victims from various police station areas such as Maloya, Sector 17, Sector 3, Sector 39, IT Park, Sarangpur, Sector 36, Sector 34 and Sector 11. The recovered vehicles were linked to 13 FIRs registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and BNSS, said the police.
Among the prominent recoveries were a motorcycle bearing registration number CH01CA8301, multiple Honda Activa scooters from different sectors of the city, a Platina motorcycle (PB65-AW-4372), and Splendor motorcycles with Haryana and Chandigarh registrations.
Several cases were also linked to complaints and DDRs lodged at different police stations. One of the accused identified as Ranbir Singh (20), a resident of Malerkotla district, Punjab, was arrested on January 10. He has a previous case registered under the NDPS Act at Sector 11 police station.
Another accused, Manjit, alias Sujal, 21, a resident of Khuda Lahora, Chandigarh, also arrested on January 10, has a criminal history with a robbery case registered at Sector 11 police station, while Vijay Kumar, 34, a resident of Mohali district, Punjab, was arrested in the same operation and has no previous criminal record.
Police said that a juvenile involved in the gang was also apprehended and has a prior case of theft registered at Sector 11 police station.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain their involvement in other theft cases, said the police.
The operation was conducted on the directions of SP (Crime) Jasbir Singh, under the guidance of DSP (Crime) Dhiraj Kumar and the supervision of SHO Inspector Satvinder Singh.
