The Sohana police has booked a woman clerk deployed on an outsourced basis with the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board for allegedly marking fake attendance and drawing salary without reporting for duty.

The accused has been identified as Komal Sharma, a resident of Subhash Nagar, Manimajra, Chandigarh. She is the sister-in-law of Chandigarh Ward No. 4 councillor Suman Sharma, who resently switched over to the BJP from the AAP.

Police registered a case against her under Section 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused was produced before the duty magistrate on Sunday and was remanded in two-day custody, said DSP (City-2) Harsimran Singh Bal.

Police said Komal Sharma worked as a clerk (outsourced) with the board. Her duty was assigned at the camp office of the chairman in Sector 76, Mohali, while her attendance reports were submitted to the main office in Sector 27, Chandigarh. It is alleged that for a considerable period, she did not report for duty but continued to submit attendance reports regularly and drew her salary.

According to the complaint, the matter came to light when the attendance report for December 2025 was not received on time, prompting an inquiry. During verification, the chairman’s office clarified that the employee concerned had been absent from duty for a long time. Despite this, attendance reports were being submitted in her name and salary was withdrawn.

Following the chairman’s directions, departmental records were scrutinised, after which the case was referred to the Vigilance Bureau. The Vigilance Bureau forwarded the complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohali. After investigation, the Sohana police registered a case against the accused for fraud and misuse of government funds.

DSP Bal said that a thorough investigation is underway and relevant records are being examined. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings. They added that such cases in government and semi-government departments are being taken seriously and strict action will be ensured against those found guilty.
