A team of State Forest Department, Pune, nabbed three persons and recovered five Alexandrine parakeets, locally known as pahadi popat and one rose-ringed parakeet, also called deshi popat, from Tingre Nagar area on Sunday.
As stated in the press release, the forest department team led by range forest officers Rushikesh Chavan and Suresh Warak raided a spot at Shanti Nagar in Tingre Nagar locality on Friday.
They nabbed three persons from a house and seized six parakeets from their possession. Forest officials said the seized parakeets are protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act.
A First Information Report has been registered under the Wildlife Protection Act against the three suspects for their alleged involvement in smuggling the parakeets.
“The three accused are residents of the Tingre Nagar area and were found to be selling the parakeets illegally. We are not revealing the details of the arrested accused as further investigation is on. Attempts are on to find more people involved in the crime,” said Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Vishal Chavan.
The investigation team of the forest department will produce the accused persons before a court in Pune on Monday to seek their custody in order to probe the case further.
The state forest department has also appealed to citizens to contact the toll free number 1296 to provide information on any illegal activities pertaining to wildlife.
