8226; Apropos of 8216;Hum Madam Mrs DGP ki duty par hain8217; IE, April 10, if DGP M.S. Malik can be asked to go on leave because his wife, Krishna, has agreed to contest the Parliament elections from Haryana, then by the same logic Maharashtra CM Sushil Kumar Shinde, too, should be asked to go on leave because his wife, too, is contesting these parliamentary elections. As CM, Shinde is already influencing the voters, first by choosing his wife as a candidate, then not being in office most of the time because of that. He is, in fact, influencing the entire government machinery to work for her. Certainly there cannot be two interpretations of the same EC directives. That is why I gave the suggestion some time ago that general elections should be held under President8217;s rule and state elections under Governor8217;s rule. Three months before the proposed elections, elected representatives should be removed from the power.

Promises, promises

8226; There are promises galore by all the political parties just before election time but have they ever tried to implement them sincerely? I think not. To ensure they try their best to implement what they promise, the Election Commission should monitor their performance and, before the next election, debar those parties from contesting the elections if they did not sincerely work toward achieving their promises.

Why the boycott

8226; Apropos of 8216;Hurriyat8217;s heroics8217; IE, April 9, in a territory which is recognised the world over as one whose status is yet to be defined after ascertaining the wishes of its people through the resolutions passed about 55 years back at the UN, what is the constitutional and legal legitimacy that such elections enjoy? In a territory which is under the illegal occupation of about one million military or paramilitary forces of India and where, at an average, about 40 people are brutally killed daily at the hands of security forces through custodial killings and fake encounters, where loot is the order of the day, is it fair to talk of elections? Given these circumstances, we have decided, as ever before, to keep away from this whole process.

Ignoring facts

8226; Madhu Kishwar should realise that two wrongs do not make a right 8216;What women want8217;, IE, April 10. The issue is not so much about the right to property as of declaring a legal citizen 8216;persona non grata8217; simply because she has been married to an 8216;outsider8217; he may be a citizen of India. The PDP is making this segregation watertight8212; so much for its commitment to 8220;national integration8221;. Kishwar8217;s insidious innuendo 8220;at the behest of Kashmiri Pandits and Dogras8221; reveals her cunning and abject animosity for Hindus. She deliberately ignores the fact that whereas the original law was promulgated in 1927, there has been a sea change in the polity of the entire region, so much so that these very 8220;Pandits who are the most vociferous in demanding a 8216;complete8217; integration of Kashmir with India8221;, have become the victims of one of the most vicious pogroms ever launched against any community.
