What exactly is the new millennium? A cold, statistical event that repeats itself every thousand years? Or is there more to it than that, and even if there is, does it justify all the fuss?

Culturally, we Indians are non fussy people. We queue up patiently for buses, school admissions, monthly rations, jobs8230;. even promotions. For a people that pride themselves for their amazing ability to wait, a millennium isn8217;t such a long time.

One year from now, we hardly expect to step out, smack, in the middle of some magnificent sci-fi setting. The dawn of the new millennium may still see us riding the same cranky buses to work over potholes that even our grandparents might recognise.

Nevertheless, we can8217;t help twitching the moment the m-word is uttered. Even our hungry, illiterate brethren sit up, as politicians rant about the Year 2000. Open drains and unfinished roads are quickly sidelined. The country must reserve funds for a higher purpose. More internet connections, for instance.

You now what I8217;m trying to say 8211; just treat the new millennium as some insignificant calendar event.8217; Right?

Wrong, I8217;m afraid. An event that arrives but once in a thousand years, certainly deserves more respect. And by respect, I mean respect. Sans the mindless hype, the maniacal pursuit of Millennium Cars, Millennium Babies, Millennium Fashions8230;.. and a million other ways of being in8217; with the times.

By respect, I mean the ability to look objectively at a rare opportunity. The opportunity to be part of a momentous transition. The opportunity to reflect on our past and present. To correct the wrongs and build up on the rights. Because if we must congratulate ourselves on the dawn of the new millennium, let8217;s make sure we deserve the credit.
