CHANDIGARH, Aug 13: Local college and university teachers abstained from teaching and observed a strike for the third consecutive day today on a call given by the All India Federation of University and College Teacher8217;s Organisation AIFUCTO.

Dharnas were staged by teachers in their respective colleges and the strike was complete in all the city institutions. According to N S Mann, president of PU Teachers8217; Association and convener PFUTA, the recently formed co-ordination committee of university and college teachers, has decided to organise a seminar on August 17 on 8220; Teachers Struggle and Higher Education in India.8221;

PFUTA has also called a meeting on August 16, at PU campus, to review the situation and discuss the future action plan.

The teachers will also organise a protest rally in Sector 17, on August 21, to press for the implementation of UGC scales. They will distribute hand bills among the city residents about the 8220;misleading8221; advertisement given by the Human Resource and Development Ministry about the pay-scales of university and college teachers.

Meanwhile, PUSU organising secretary Rohit Sharma and HSA president Sudhir Ahlawat have, in press releases, urged the teaching community to resume teaching work for the benefit of the students.
